The backend is driven by a Rails application which hosts several mechanisms for gathering report data.

API

We intend to build an API which will allow developers to build visualizations and request specific data.  We will generally lean towards support of open standards, like KML, GeoRSS, and GeoJSON, and are open to requests and ideas.  What could you use?
